Top campervan destinations not to miss in 2022

Some countries cater for campervans and their ‘inhabitants’ more efficiently than others by offering a better road network and a broader selection of campsites for overnight stays. Other key factors include the quality of their tourist sights (with nearby parking facilities) and the beauty of their landscapes and associated natural attractions.

No matter where you are planning to go – be it Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia or North America – Auto Europe will always be able to find you the right vehicle for your next motorhome holiday, which many travellers consider to be the ultimate open-road adventure.

The USA always springs to mind when the idea of road-trip in an RV (recreational vehicle) gets mentioned. It’s a vast country with many long, straight roads and a great variety of landscapes to explore. Few travellers can resist the idea of driving over San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge before heading south to Los Angeles down the awe-inspiring Pacific Coast Highway. America is equally famous for the legendary Route 66 which covers some 2,500 miles between Chicago and California, with lots of amazing experiences to be had in-between.

Australia is another very popular choice on the list of the world’s most appealing destinations for an exciting campervan vacation. The long drive across the Outback in time to see Ayers Rock (now better known as Uluru) glow bright red at sunset is one of the most incredible natural lightshows on the planet. And no independent traveller worth their salt can leave Australia without experiencing the thrill of driving along the Great Ocean Road beside the country’s breathtaking southern shoreline.

Equally inspiring is New Zealand, a country that is very well versed in making visitors feel completely at home, especially those travelling in a motorhome. Unlike Australia, its two main islands (North and South) are small enough to cover in a few days and the landscapes are beyond compare when it comes to spectacular scenery.  If you’re looking for some touring ideas, we strongly recommend Fiordland National Park on South Island where you can see the famous fjords before driving up to Queenstown, one of the most picturesque cities in the whole of the Southern Hemisphere.

Of all the top European destinations, Iceland is one of the best for a memorable trip in a modern motorhome on account of its stunning scenery and abundance of natural attractions around every corner.  With its soaring snow-capped mountains, steaming lagoons (used as swimming pools by the locals), thundering waterfalls and moon-like lava fields, there’s nothing better than a leisurely road-trip around Route 1, the name of the ring road that circumnavigates the entire island. And while you’re there, keep an eye out for the Northern Lights which can often been seen dancing across the night sky between September and March.

Norway is another dream destination for those looking to enjoy the best of northern Europe in their very own hotel suite on wheels. Not only does it have some of the world’s most stunning scenery, the country is blessed with a great number of high-quality, family-friendly campsites (over 1,000 in total) offering the best conditions for people touring the country in a motorhome. And as long as you tread very lightly, Norway has a unique ‘right to roam’ law allowing travellers to go where they like, when they like, which is exactly what a campervan holiday is all about!

France is the composite motoring holiday destination with fine wine, excellent food, picture-book castles and superb beaches just a few of its most endearing qualities. With a motorhome you can enjoy the famous sights of Paris (Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, et al) before driving south to the Côte d’Azur for a few days’ rest and relaxation. After that, we suggest a visit to France’s renowned wine regions – most notably Burgundy, Beaujolais, Bordeaux and Côtes du Rhône – where you can tour the estates and taste the wines at some of Europe’s most famous vineyards.

And last but not least, Italy ticks all the boxes for travellers looking for a fun-filled motorhome adventure due to its fascinating history and stunning array of beautiful towns, cities and landscapes. Tuscany in the heart of the country is arguably the most picturesque region of them all, with Florence, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Siena and lovely little Lucca just a few of the must-see attractions to be enjoyed in this part of central Italy before heading south to visit the magnificent capital, Rome.
